Wayne Marion Wimberly

Wayne "Hotdog" Wimberly, Sr.

July 19, 1934 - February 13, 2026

Born in Ocoee, Tennessee, Wayne Marion Wimberly, Sr. lived a life so full that many considered him a legend. He was a man of uncommon spirit, intelligence and wit. He was independent, fearless, curious and he left his mark everywhere he went.

In 1952, he enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served for 4 years. He served on the. USS Pecatonica and the USS Vulcan. He served in Italy and other parts of the Mediterranean during the Korean War. After returning home, he met the love of his life, Clara Rogers Wimberly, and together they built a marriage that spanned nearly 70 years.

He adored his wife and never missed an opportunity to tell others how proud he was of her.

He was the small business owner of Wimberly's Exxon, which became far more than a business. It was a gathering place, a favorite hangout, and a cornerstone of community life for generations of friends and neighbors.

There truly wasn't much he couldn't do. He was one of the best water skiers around, loved playing horseshoes, he was well known for his skill at the pool table. In 1952 he won the Golden Gloves boxing championship. Whatever he set his mind to, he did with confidence.

Every Fourth of July, he added a little extra to Ocoee by selling fireworks under the bridge now known as Wimberly Crossing. For many, it wasn't just about buying fireworks. It was about stopping by to see him, swapping stories and laughing in his company. Those summers under the bridge became cherished memories for countless people who considered that spot a tradition and him a friend.

After retiring, his sense of adventure only grew. He and Clara traveled to every state capital in the country, having his picture taken in each one, also an unforgettable drive all the way to Alaska. He loved to travel, loved meeting new people, and truly never met a stranger. He collected stories and friendships everywhere he went. He loved a good political debate and believed deeply in civic participation. He often volunteered to work at the local election polls.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Mark and Stella Wimberly; five sisters; and six brothers.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Clara Wimberly; his son Mark Wimberly and wife Jenny, and their daughters Hannah Wimberly Lowe (married to David Lowe) and Meadow Wimberly; his son Wayne Marion Wimberly, Jr. and wife Fetina Wimberly, and their children Lindsay, Lucus, and Lily Wimberly; his daughter Suzanne Wimberly and her children Emory and Ethan Wisdom and Grace Crook; and one great-grandchild, Lennox Rhodes.

Above all else, Hotdog loved his family. He reminded them daily how he believed life should be lived: fearing nothing and no one, curiosity, and pride in who you are. His family will miss him beyond words, but they carry his lessons, his laughter, and his wild-hearted spirit forward.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Companion Funeral Home located at 2415 Georgetown Rd. NW Cleveland, TN 37311. Family and friends are invited to attend.

A private graveside service will be held with the family.
