Walter Lee "Magoo" McGill, age 81, passed away peacefully at his home in McDonald, Tennessee, on July 10, 2025.
Walter was born on June 22, 1944, at his family home in McDonald, Tennessee, where he spent most of his life. Known affectionately as "Magoo" by those who knew and loved him, Walter was a kind and steady presence in the lives of many.
In his youth, Walter proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, where he was stationed aboard the USS Ticonderoga. His family especially loved hearing his stories from his time on the ship-tales full of grit, humor, and heart that brought both laughter and pride.
After returning home, Walter spent his life working as a skilled and knowledgeable carpenter. His craftsmanship, attention to detail, and pride in his work left a lasting mark on the homes and hearts of many in his community.
Walter was a hard worker with a heart of gold. He cared deeply for those around him and was always willing to lend a helping hand-qualities that endeared him to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Outside of work, Walter found joy in gardening. He had a true green thumb and took great pride in growing vegetables, fruits, and flowers. Just as with everything else in his life, he shared generously-frequently delivering baskets of homegrown produce to family, friends, and neighbors throughout the community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Emma McGill, and siblings Ralph "Chick" McGill, Bobby McGill, Betty (Ed) Davis, Mary (Ronnie) Parker, and Della Rodie.
Walter is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Charlotte McGill; daughters Theresa McGill, Tonia (Steve) Ricketts, and Emmy McGill; grandchildren Brittany Anderson (Patrick Ellis), Sabrina (Jamey) Critchfield, and BJ Brownell; and great-grandchildren Hannah Quinn (Austin Shelly), Alyssa Anderson, Jason Anderson, Charlee Critchfield, Kalahan Critchfield, and soon-to-arrive Walter Hayes Critchfield. He is also survived by his sisters Lorene (Edgar) Swafford, Dorothy (Bill) Williamson, and Susie Hall, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
The family will receive visitors on Saturday, July 26th, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Valley View Baptist Church. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 4:00 p.m. Immediate family will gather for a private graveside service at a later date.
He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
You are invited to share a personal memory of Walter, or your condolences with his family, at his online memorial located at www.companionfunerals.com. Companion Funeral & Cremation Service and the Cody family are honored to assist the McGill family with these arrangements.
