Virgle Floyd Nelson passed away May 26, 2025, in Cleveland, TN at the age of 87. Born October 2, 1937, the son of Henry Jackson and Ruby Stegall Nelson, in Harriman, TN, later moving with his family to Cleveland.
He enlisted in the Navy in the mid-Fifties, where he served almost 10 years. He then joined the Air Force, where he served as a Special Vehicle and Base Vehicle Equipment Supervisor, Automotive Mechanic, Aircraft Pneumatic Technician, and Aircraft Mechanic Heat and Vent. Virgle proudly served in the Armed Forces for 20+ years. Virgle also retired from Bay County, FL, where he worked with pest control of mosquitoes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his 3 sisters: Barbara Jean Rayburn, Sherry Huffaker and Carolyn Hysinger and brother James Ralph Nelson, Virginia Nelson (wife), and Rick Nelson (son). Virgil is survived by his wife Barbara Cantrell-Nelson of Cleveland, TN :Sister, Linda (Ronnie) Ball of Cleveland, TN: Brothers, Danny (Linda) Nelson of Cleveland ,TN and Gary (Sharon) Nelson of Cleveland, TN : Sister-in-Law Tina Nelson of Athens, TN: Daughter Linda (Mike) Nelson, Step Daughters: Debbie (David) Croft, Sherry (Robert), Rettig and Donna (David) Young: Grandchildren: Brandon Nelson, Melissa (Allen) Palmer, James Rettig, John (Cassie) Young, Holly Young. Great-Grandchildren: Ethan Nelson, Andrew Nelson and Cirilla Claire Rettig
Virgle enjoyed reading, especially westerns, watching football, especially if it involved the Florida Seminoles, NASCAR racing, traveling, and hot dog parties.
Services are to be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at Abundant Life Church of Cleveland, TN. Visiting will be Noon-2:00, with services beginning at 2:00.
Virgle will be laid to rest, with full Military Honors, at the Chattanooga National Cemetery on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at 2:30 p.m.
