Verna Kate Balog, age 78, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025.
A proud graduate of Polk County High School, Class of 1966, Kate lived a full and varied life. Her love for travel took her across the country, living in several different states before ultimately returning to her roots in Polk County, where she spent the last 23 years of her life.
Kate was known as a kind and generous neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand. Over the years, she held a number of different jobs, but she especially enjoyed her time working at Bradley Square Mall, where she formed many lasting friendships.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Balog; her parents, Thomas J. Mowery and Pauline Mysinger Mowery; siblings Lois (Sammy) Pickelsimer, Clyde Mowery, James (Mary) Mowery, Thomas Mowery Jr.; and her brother-in-law, Jimmy Allmon.
Kate is survived by her loving siblings, Charles Grady (Terry) Mowery and Belvia Joyce Allmon; her sister-in-law, Vickie Mowery; 14 nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in her heart; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
The family is planning a joint remembrance for Verna and her brother James Mowery, that will be on October 25, 2025 at Red Clay State Park starting at 11:30 am.
She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
