Thurlow Edward Williamson Jr.,affectionately known as "Ed", age 72, passed away unexpectedly on June 29, 2026.
Ed faithfully and honorably served his country for over 24 years in the United States Marine Corps. Beginning his military career as an enlisted infantryman, he rose through the ranks to become an Infantry Warrant Officer before his retirement. Following his distinguished service in the Marines, Ed continued his dedication to others by entering law enforcement. He proudly served the citizens of Athens, Tennessee as a patrol officer with the Athens Police Department, where he was later assigned to the Athens Housing Authority. There, he embraced community policing and worked diligently to strengthen and uplift the community.
Ed went on to serve the citizens of McMinn County as a patrol deputy, continuing his lifelong commitment to service. After many years devoted to his country and community, he retired and spent his remaining years peacefully with his son.
Throughout his life, Ed made a lasting impact on those around him, especially his children and many others he considered family. He will be remembered for his dedication, strength, and the deep love he had for his family and community.
Ed is survived by his cherished son, Matthew (daughter-in-law Nicole) and his daughter, Raychel (son-in-law Adam and family);along with several other loving family members, including Jamie Belton and family, James Carlin and Wife Tezrah, Elizabeth Carlin and Denise Fawcett, Darlene Guenther, and several friends he has made over the years. His legacy of service and devotion will never be forgotten and will always be respected.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 12, 2026 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Chapel of Companion Funeral Home in Athens, Tennessee. A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026 at 10:30 AM at Chattanooga National Cemetery. The United States Marine Corps will be present to render military honors, including a gun salute, in recognition of Ed's faithful service to our country.
