Thomas Perry Masty

Thomas Perry Masty, 68, of Ooltewah, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at home on September 15, 2025, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He courageously faced stage 4 esophageal cancer, first diagnosed in 2015.

Thomas was born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, to the late Stephen T. Masty and Ellen Douglas Masty, and was raised in Birmingham, Michigan. He cherished his years at Hillsdale College, where he formed lifelong friendships and was deeply shaped by the college's values-a period of his life he often recalled with pride. He later earned a master's degree in education from Wayne State University.

Thomas loved people and was very curious about life. He always had time for a joke, a story, or a kind word. Known for his laughter, warmth, and generosity, he was guided by his Catholic faith and love of family throughout his life. He pursued many interests, including fishing and hunting, photography, and cooking, and found the greatest joy when sharing those passions with his loved ones.

Thomas lived in many states over the years, including Florida, North Carolina, Arizona, California, and Idaho, before settling in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He connected deeply with friends, neighbors, and family wherever he lived. He also had an extended family and numerous cousins spread throughout the country. Thomas enjoyed his work, particularly his years in politics within conservative circles.

Thomas is survived by his devoted wife of 23 years, Linda; his daughter, Ivy Elliott; his cherished grandchildren, Cierra Jade Grinnell; and his grandson, Antonio Charles Grinnell, who were both by his side in his final days. He was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Stephen T. Masty, who passed in England in 2015.

Per his wishes, Thomas has been cremated in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There will be no public service, but friends and family are warmly invited to share memories, photos, and tributes on his Facebook page.
