Susan Elaine Abernathy passed away on April 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Susan was a faithful member of Union Grove Church of Christ, where she served as a devoted Bible school teacher. She had a special gift with children, and the youth adored her. Her faith was evident in the way she lived, loved, and poured into others.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and Nana. Susan is survived by her husband of 41 years, Mike Abernathy; her daughters, Michelle Abernathy and Abby Cox (husband, Lee); and her two beloved grandsons, Reese Godsey and Liam Cox. Her "Nana's boys" were truly her sunshine and brought her endless joy.
She is also survived by her in-laws, H.L. and Nancy Abernathy, and her sister-in-law, Jill (Jim).
Affectionately known as "Susie Q" by so many, she also leaves behind her loving sisters and brother, Donna (Richard), Karen, and James (Sharon), who will deeply feel her absence.
She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Brandon (Allie), Tanner (Emily), Jake, Kelli (Shane), and Katie (Clayton), Eric and Erica along with many cherished great-nieces and great-nephews: Chloe, Hunter, Tyson, Samuel, Hillary, Kamp, Maddux, Cutter, and Lorelai. She was an aunt who was loved more than words could ever express.
Susan dedicated many years of hard work, spending 20 years at Magic Chef and another 20 years at McKee Bakery, where she built lasting friendships and touched many lives.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Peggy Ann Brown, and her father, John Kirk Brown.
Susan will be remembered for her kindness, her strong faith, her love for her family, and the way she made everyone feel special. While she will be greatly missed, her legacy of love and faith will live on in all who knew her.
A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, April 17, 2026 at 3:00 pm at Union Grove Church of Christ with Preacher Jeff Archey officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm prior to the service. A graveside service is to follow at Union Grove Church of Christ Cemetery with Mike Abernathy, James Brown, Lee Cox, Tanner Thompson, Brandon Thompson, Jake Thompson, Clayton Steel, and Shane Dale serving as pallbearers.
You are invited to share a personal memory of Susan or your condolences with her family at her online memorial located at www.companionfunerals.com. Companion Funeral Home of Cleveland and the Cody family are honored to assist the family with these arrangements.
