Samuel W. Smeltzer, Jr., who became my father-not by blood, but by choice-was a man of strength, dedication, and love. I met him when I was 11, and although he never had to raise me or love me, he chose to do both. From that choice grew a bond that shaped my life, and he became the man I proudly called Dad.

Sam was one of the hardest-working men I have ever known-some might have called him a workaholic-but he showed his love not through words, but through presence and example. Though a man of few words, his impact on everyone who knew him was immeasurable.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Sam served his country with honor and integrity, a reflection of the values he carried throughout his life.

Sam never played a game he didn't excel at including pool, some might even call him a pool shark. He loved playing any type of card game and Wii bowling. Though he hasn't been able to do it in recent years, he enjoyed deer hunting with his family and friends.

He leaves behind several grandchildren who proudly called him Pap Pap.

Dad, thank you for being exactly who you were. You will be missed more than words can ever express.
