Sally Davis Hutchins Gregory died peacefully on August 17, 2026, at the Alexian Village on Signal Mountain, Tennessee. She was born on September 18, 1933, in Benton, Tennessee, to J. P. Hutchins and Helen Caughran Hutchins. She was the beloved only child in the Hutchins family, and was doted on by her grandmother, Elsie Rogers Hutchins, whose family was one of the first to settle in Polk County. Elsie's children, the late Erline Hutchins Hammons and James Harvey Hammons, as well as Burch W. Hutchins shared their memories and knowledge of the history of Polk County, Tennessee, which she used to contribute valuable information to author Tyler Boyd, where she is quoted many times in his book, The Biggs Machine.
Sally was the mother of three children, Gail Gregory McLeod, James Neil (Bo) Gregory, and Madge Gregory. She has five grandchildren, Ashley McLeod Shuford, Jay Cox, Chase Gregory, Austin Gregory, and Mikel Gregory, and three great-grandchildren, Harper Shuford, Cooper Hatcher, and Sawyer Gregory. She loved all of them and took great pride in their many accomplishments.
Sally received her Associate's Degree as an RN in 1972 from Cleveland State Community College, and spent many years working in several hospitals in the area, However, her greatest pleasure was as a traveling nurse working in rural and community nursing.
An active member of the Cherokee Democrat Women's Club, Sally served in several different capacities working for the Hamilton County Democratic Party.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of the Health Care Facility of Alexian Village at 2:00 on Friday, August 21, 2026, where family and care givers will honor her life. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of the facility for their love and devotion. Chaplain Margaret Ferguson, who was much loved by all of us, will officiate.
The family will hold a Celebration of Life at the Benton United Methodist Church, where Sally was a member, on Sunday, August 30, at 2:00.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Polk County Historical Society would be appreciated.
