Ronald James Smith, 58, of McDonald, Tennessee, passed away unexpectedly on July 30, 2025. Born and raised in Whittier, California, Ron proudly served 31 years with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and retired as a lieutenant. He dedicated his life to service, family, and the great outdoors.
After retiring, Ron and his wife Diane made Tennessee their home-what he fondly called "God's country." He often joked, "We left hell... and we're living in heaven." Ron embraced retirement with joy, always saying, "Let me check my schedule," before agreeing to anything-because he finally had all the time in the world.
Ron had a deep love for camping, riding dirt bikes, mountain biking, fishing, and building roaring campfires. He took immense pride in landscaping their seven acres-especially his perfectly manicured lawn and bright blue pond. He spent hours tending to the property, and there was no doubt how much joy it brought him to keep everything looking beautiful.
He was happiest surrounded by family. Ron is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Diane Smith; daughters Krista and Lauran; and his beloved granddaughter Savannah, who lovingly called him Pop Pop. Ron was immensely proud of his sons-in-law-he often said he gained sons, not just sons-in-law. He can now rest easy knowing they will carry on his legacy and take care of the family.
He is also survived by his parents, Don and Connie Smith; and his sisters, Vicki and Shelly. Ron deeply loved his dogs and, despite acting frazzled when strays came home, would always end up with one snuggled on his chest by night's end.
Ron will be remembered for his huge heart, his humor, his strength, and the way he made every day feel like an adventure. Every morning began with him asking, "What do you want to do today?"-followed by a funny "song of the day" to set the tone.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 10, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Companion Funeral Home, 2412 Georgetown Road, Cleveland, TN. A police escort will follow to Antioch Cemetery in McDonald, TN, with a Celebration of Life immediately after at 2864 Old Alabama Road SW, McDonald, TN.
Ron was the kind of man who left this world better than he found it-and we will carry his light with us, always.
