Robert S. Reffner Obituary
Robert S. Reffner (Bob), age 83, of Cleveland, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2026, surrounded by those who loved him most.
Born on April 26, 1943, in Williamsburg, Pennsylvania, Bob lived a life marked by dedication, leadership, and a deep love for his family and community. Following his graduation from Williamsburg High School in 1961, he moved to Cleveland in 1962 to attend Lee University (then Lee College), where he met the love of his life, Annette. Together, they shared 64 beautiful years of marriage, building a life rooted in faith, devotion, and unwavering commitment. Bob remained a proud alumnus of Lee University throughout his life.
Bob was a longtime and faithful member of North Cleveland Church of God, where his faith guided how he lived, served, and loved others.
He began his professional career in education, teaching at Charleston Elementary and Oak Grove Elementary from 1965 to 1969. His passion for education continued through his service on the Bradley County Schools Board of Education from 1978 to 1984, where he also served as Chairman of the Board.
From 1970 to 1974, Bob served as Sports Editor for the Cleveland Daily Banner, reflecting his deep love for sports and storytelling. His passion extended beyond writing, as he also spent many years as a high school sports commentator on WCLE. Whether through print or the airwaves, Bob brought enthusiasm and insight to the games he loved. In 1974, he was given an opportunity by D.S. Stewart at Hardwick Clothes-a decision that would shape the next chapter of his life. Bob began as Human Resources Director and rose to Vice President of Human Resources, dedicating 33 years to the company before retiring in 2007. His leadership was marked by integrity, respect, and a genuine concern for people.
A man deeply rooted in his community, Bob was known by many for his dedication and service. Throughout his life, he was actively involved in numerous civic organizations, including serving on the board of Cleveland Associated Industries and as Chairman of the Personnel Club. His influence reached far beyond his profession, leaving a lasting and meaningful mark on the community he loved.
Music was another cherished part of Bob's life. As a member of the Gospelaires Quartet from 1973 to 1994, he traveled, recorded albums, and shared his gift as a tenor, touching countless lives through song.
Bob's greatest joy in life was his family-especially his grandchildren, whom he adored beyond measure. He was endlessly proud of each of them and treasured every moment they spent together. Some of the most meaningful memories were made on family trips, especially those shared in the RV, where laughter filled the days and simple moments became lasting treasures. Those times together will forever live in the hearts of his grandchildren. Bob and Annette created a home filled with love, and their grandchildren became the center of their world.
Above all, Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Annette Reffner; daughter Kimberly Reffner Powers (Joe); sons Keith Reffner (Stephanie) and Robert Reffner II; grandchildren Andrew Reffner (Maranda), Lauren Johnson (Tanner), Hunter Greene (Peyton), Taylor Reffner, and Robert Reffner III; and great-grandchildren Landen and Jackson Reffner, Penelope and Jennings Johnson, and Nathaniel Reffner. He is also survived by his niece, Gina Floyd (Tom), and great-niece and nephew, Eddie Daresta and Sydney Daresta, along with several other nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse F. Reffner and Lois Jean Frye Reffner, and his sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie Beaty and Robert Beaty.
The family would like to extend a special and heartfelt thank you to Adoration Hospice for the compassionate care, guidance, and support provided during Bob's final days. Your kindness was a true blessing to our family.
The funeral service will be held in the Dixon Chapel at North Cleveland Church of God, with Reverend Mitch Maloney officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026, with the service to follow at 1:00 p.m. A private family interment will take place at Hiwassee Memorial Gardens following the service. Arrangements are being handled by Companion Funeral & Cremation Service.
Bob will be remembered for his steady leadership, servant's heart, and the lasting impact he made on his family, his workplace, his church, and the community he loved so deeply. His legacy of faith, service, and love will continue to live on-especially in the hearts of his family, who were his greatest joy.
