Robert "Bert" Carruthers, age 91, passed away July 16, 2025. Bert was born July 21, 1933, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, son of the late Robert and Jane Carruthers. A lifelong learner with an insatiable curiosity, Bert had a deep passion for knowledge that enriched every chapter of his life.
Bert was a Chartered Engineer whose career spanned from ICI in Ireland to the start up the Cleveland M&M/Mars plant.
He experienced the world in extraordinary ways-from witnessing the German bombing of Belfast during the Blitz in 1941 to driving the Autobahn and traveling extensively across Europe and the United States as an engineer and with family. He found joy in life's simple pleasures as well, whether casting a line into the lakes and streams of Ireland, England, and the U.S., setting up an easel to paint with his children or tending to his garden, a lifelong passion.
He loved sharing stories about life and philosophy. With a sharp intellect and an infectious zest for living, Bert touched the hearts and minds of many. Those who knew him will always remember his wisdom, humor, and generous spirit.
Above all, Bert's greatest devotion was to his beloved wife Sally of 70 years. In addition to Sally, he is also survived by his son Michael George Carruthers, daughter Amanda Jayne Carruthers and son Robert Gary Carruthers; 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews in Tennessee, Georgia, Ireland and Dubai. His entire family will carry forward his legacy of curiosity, compassion, selflessness and love of learning in their hearts. He will be deeply missed.
A Celebration of Life will be at a later date.
