Rita Lynn Johnston

Rita Johnston, lovingly known to her family as Rita Lynn, was born on October 24, 1957, and passed away on September 17, 2026 surrounded by the love of those who cherished her. Rita lived a life defined by generosity, community, and a spirit that welcomed everyone through her door.

Rita had a deep love for animals and always kept close companions by her side throughout the years. She found joy in simple pleasures-vacations to Daytona Beach, afternoons spent shopping, and every visit to a Harley-Davidson store, where she felt right at home.

A natural host and community builder, Rita owned two bars during her lifetime, each one a place where the doors were always open and the atmosphere reflected her warm, inviting nature. She loved hosting dart competitions and was an enthusiastic member of the Cleveland Dart Association, where she formed lasting friendships and unforgettable memories.

Rita's heart for giving was one of her defining qualities. She was passionate about fundraising and especially dedicated to supporting Toys for Tots. Whether through collections at her bars or personal donations later in life, Rita never stopped giving to a cause she believed in deeply.

Though she did not have children of her own, Rita was a devoted aunt to her nieces Ashley Manus (Steven) and Amy Ownby (Ryan and great-nephew, Garrett). She also carried the memory of her nephew Zachary Smith, who preceded her in death. Rita embraced two bonus children, Andrew "Andy" Wells and Michelle Wells, who held a special place in her heart.

Rita is also preceded in death by her mother Margie Price and her father Thomas Lynn Johnston. She is survived by her sister Sharon Smith, her special brother Michael Smith, and special family members Lisa Morgan and her family, Theresa Lowe, and her devoted caretaker Karen Sosebee. She leaves behind a large extended family who will forever remember her kindness, humor, and unwavering love.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Toys for Tots, a cause Rita supported faithfully throughout her life.

A Remembrance of Life event will be held at Fletcher Park Pavilion 1 on Friday September 25, 2026 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, where friends and family will gather to celebrate the life of a woman who gave so much of herself to others.
