Listen to Obituary

Richard Gary Paul, 70, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on February 25, 2026. Gary was a devoted husband, father, Opa, and friend to his family and many others.

Gary was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area. A U.S. Navy Veteran, he served in the mid-1970’s aboard the U.S.S. Robison. He later studied at the University of Tennessee and at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he earned his bachelor’s degree in communications.

His presence was a gift to everyone that he encountered, and he will be deeply missed. His sense of humor was rivaled by very few. Never meeting a stranger, every conversation with Gary left one with a brighter day. Gary connected with us through his love of music, creating countless cherished memories of concerts, listening sessions, road trips, parties and discussions.

Gary dedicated his life to helping others, through his work and on his own time, embodying a sacrificial mindset that has served as an example to countless people. His development efforts raised money for many non-profits, including promoting higher education, feeding the hungry, sheltering the vulnerable, and aiding those in crisis. He used his time and skills to fix houses, cars, and anything else in need of repair. He opened his home for those who were lonely, lost, hurt, or far from home. Gary never missed his family’s concerts, baseball games, or award ceremonies, regardless of logistics. His legacy of adventure, laughter, and sacrifice for others will sustain far longer and further than he could’ve imagined.

His charge to others would be to take the trip; speak your mind; make a friend; and dare to eat a peach.

Gary is survived by his wife Tina, sons Austin (Ashley) and Jonah (Katherine), and grandchildren Stella, Joe, Sam and Griffin.

A memorial service will be held at First-Centenary United Methodist Church on March 7, 2026. Visitation begins at 12:30 p.m. and the memorial service will follow at 2:00. Gary will be laid to rest at the Chattanooga National Cemetery the following week.
