Paul William Dowdy Jr., 69, passed away unexpectedly on May 20, 2026, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near his home on the Hiwassee River, a place where he loved spending much of his time.

Bill was the youngest child and only son of Paul William Dowdy Sr. and Wanda L. Brown Dowdy. He was born on October 30, 1956, in Cleveland, Tennessee.

He graduated from Bradley Central High School and shortly afterward began working at Westvaco, where he spent most of his career and formed many lifelong friendships. Later in life, he worked for Eagle Mausoleums until he was promoted to the title of Papaw. He became best buds with his first grandson, Landan, and chose to remain close to his daughter and grandchildren rather than continue traveling for work.

Bill enjoyed life's simple pleasures, including boating, bass fishing, and spending time with friends. He was a talented craftsman and skilled carpenter who built numerous beautiful homes, and the quality of his work rivaled that of professional contractors. He was a true "Mr. Fix It," capable of tackling almost any household repair. He was also a gifted woodworker who found great joy in creating cherished keepsakes for those he loved. Friends and family often joked that Bill was their own version of Bob Vila, able to build or repair almost anything. To Bill, there were no shortcuts; he believed that if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing with excellence.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Wanda Dowdy; his sisters, Phyllis Dowdy and Vickie Morton; and his two infant sons, Paul William "B.J." Dowdy III and Patrick Ryan Dowdy, whose memories remained forever close to his heart and whom he missed deeply throughout his life.

He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer "Jenni" Dowdy Wright, and her husband, Danny Wright; his grandchildren, Destiny Wright, and her Fiancé, Brady Harris), Landan Wright, and his Fiancée, Megan London, Lyric Wright, and Mason Wright; his great-grandchildren, Easton Harris, Lawson Harris, and Ezra "E.J." Wright; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, numerous friends: and extended family members; and his treasured friend, Jerry Johnston, who stood by his side throughout many seasons of his life.

No public services are planned currently. The family has chosen a period of private reflection and remembrance and encourages friends and loved ones to cherish the memories and special moments they shared with Bill. A public memorial gathering will be held later, and details will be announced when they become available
