Patricia (Patty) Hester Callaway passed away in her home on June 12, 2026. Patty was the beloved daughter of William and Mabel Hester of Columbus, Georgia. She was born on November 23, 1944.
Patty was a graduate of Stephens College and the University of Georgia majoring in Mathematics and Education. After graduation, she obtained employment as a systems engineer at IBM. Ms. Callaway was one of the first female computer programmers at IBM. Patty later became a systems engineer consultant with many local Cleveland industries. She retired from her profession while employed with American Uniform Company.
In addition to her professional work, Patty also devoted much of her life to volunteer work. Ms. Callaway was the founder of the Food Bank of Cleveland. She started the food bank to support striking workers at Magic Chef and others in need in the future. She was awarded Cleveland's volunteer of the year for her work. She was also in charge of St. Luke's Episcopal Church Caring and Sharing program which was dedicated to serving the needs of those in need. Patty served on the vestry of St. Luke's Episcopal Church for many years as well.
Patty is survived by her son, Bryan Montague Callaway and his wife Heather Anne Callaway of Neptune Beach, Florida; and her beloved grandson, Montgomery Callaway of Panama City Beach, Florida.
Patty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hugh Wheeler Callaway, Jr. of Cleveland, Tennessee; her son, Howard Montgomery Callaway of Cleveland, Tennessee; her parents, William Hester and Mabel Hester of Columbus, Georgia; her sisters, Peggy Ledford of Columbus, Georgia and Jane Cummings of Columbus, Georgia.
Services will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2026 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 320 Broad Street, Cleveland, Tennessee with Father Joel Huffstetler officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall at St. Luke's Episcopal Church before the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 5, Cleveland, Tennessee, 37364.
