It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Mildred "Millie" Sharon Benefield, age 95, went home to be with the Lord on April 18, 2026 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She was born January 25, 1931 in Big Cove, Alabama to the late Reba and John "Gussie" Bird.
Millie touched many lives with her wisdom, perseverance, and her unwavering faith and trust in God. She was known as a prayer warrior and was a pastor's wife for over 30 years. One of her outstanding accomplishments during that time was a children's daycare she started in the early 1970s that is still thriving to this day.
Millie devoted her life to her family and was known for the creative ways she made ordinary things special. She was an outstanding cook, had an amazing green thumb, and made beautiful, one-of-a-kind floral arrangements. Everything she touched was transformed into something more beautiful and special. She made her home a place of beauty and comfort. She has left a legacy of faith and prayer, determination, and overcoming hardship. She lived a simple life with class and dignity. Every day she gave God glory and tried to encourage someone else, even in the midst of her own challenges.
In addition to her parents, Millie was preceded in death by one son, Anthony "Tony" Benefield (and fondly remembered by Tony's wife, Angie); five brothers, Robert Bird, Gene Bird, Thomas Bird, Jerry Byrd, and Wayne Bird.
She is survived by two sons, Lyman Gary (Carol) Benefield of Floral City, Florida, Rodney Benefield of Cleveland, Tennessee; two daughters, Karen Benefield of Nashville, Tennessee, Shari Mehok of Nashville, Tennessee; Two brothers, Donald (Lillian) Bird of Cleveland, Tennessee, Douglas (Libby) Bird of Galax, Virginia; two sisters, Martha Webster of Dundas, Virginia, Paulette (Stanley) Brock of Tavares, Florida; eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren, along with many nephews and nieces who will sadly miss her and remember her always.
At the family's request, there will be no service at this time. A family Celebration of Life is planned near her birthplace in Huntsville, Alabama at a time to be determined.
As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the life of faith, hope, love, and beauty that were the essence of who she was and cherish the memories that will forever warm our hearts.
