Mr. Michael A. Johnson, Mike or Alabama Mike, passed away at age 75 peacefully at his cabin on March 10, 2026, surround by his family and his beloved dog, Wheezy.
Michael was born in Chatsworth, GA to Will A. and Thelma Johnson. Michael married Nina Osby Johnson from Chickamauga, GA on July 2, 1971 and together they raised 3 children: Andy, Ginny and Becky. Mike was a graduate of LaFayette High School class of 1969. Mike was a member of the Church of Christ and an ardent supporter of the Tunnel 2 Towers Organization.
My Dad was an avid sportsman. He hunted, fished, played baseball, softball, and golf. When it came to hunting, no creature in the woods was safe He came for all of you: deer, turkey, rabbit, quail, dove. My family ate what my Dad killed. He always kept us well fed and stocked throughout the year. He even won BEST COOK 2 years in a row for his deer chili. He was known locally and throughout the Southeast for his talents on the softball field. He once turned a triple play all by himself! Remarkable! Stump Martin once said on his T.V. show that Mike Johnson was the best shortstop he had ever seen play the game! When Dad's playing days ended on the diamond, he turned his love and passion for the game into umpiring. Mike was named 2011 TSFA Umpire of the Year.
His talents did not end with the diamond. My Dad had a beautiful golf swing. He achieved what most golfers only try to with every drive of every match - a hole in one! I remember the call that day from him in the clubhouse. He was so giddy! He had to buy everyone a drink for his accomplishment.
Another one of Dad's most enduring qualities was his work ethic - it truly was unmatched. Mike worked for U.S. Pipe and Foundry for over 30 years. He began working there in 1977, the year I was born, and continued with them until its closing. Mike was the Foreman of the Cupola at U.S. Pipe. Mike then began working for The Fire Brick Company for over 10 years and stayed with them until his retirement.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents Will A. and Thelma Ingle Johnson and one brother, Kenneth Johnson all from LaFayette, GA.
Mike is survived by his 3 children Andy (Somer) Johnson, Ginny Johnson and Becky (Nick) Johnson, 2 grandchildren Claire (Nathan) Murrell, Conner Johnson, 1 Great-Grandson Theo, and his beloved dog Wheezy, his siblings: Mary Elizabeth Powell (aka Pete) of Summerville, Bobby (Linda) Johnson of Chickamuga, Douglas Doyle (Beth) Johnson of Calhoun, Larry (Foye) Johnson of LaFayette, Cathy (Roger) Bradley of LaFayette, Judy (Melvin) Parker of LayFayette, and Steve (Kim) Johnson and many, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
The children will be honoring Dad with a celebration of life in late Spring for family and friends at his beloved cabin, which was his sanctuary. The date will be announced at a later time.
