Mary Rose Sidowey Gatlin passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 10, 2026, surrounded by her family, leaving behind a lifetime of love, laughter, cherished memories, and friendships that stood the test of time. Mary would have celebrated her 84th birthday on November 22.

Born to William and Lucy Sidowey, Mary lost her mother at a young age and was lovingly raised by Catherine Sidowey. She was the beloved little sister of Bill and Bob Sidowey. Family was always at the heart of her life, and one of her greatest joys was being "Nena" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It was a name she wore with pride and a role she treasured.

Mary was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Angie Sherrill, her angel.

She is survived by her sons, Chip Gatlin and his wife, Kelly, and Jimmy Gatlin and his wife, Karyn; her grandchildren, Jennifer Thomas, Blake England and his wife, Lauren, Abbie White and her husband, Chase, Adam and his wife, Molly, Nick Gatlin, and Conner Gatlin and his wife, Madison; and her great-grandchildren, Ryan Thomas, Baker White, Hudson White, Rosie England, and Winnie England. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Mary dedicated 42 years of her life to Memorial Hospital, where she built far more than a career. She formed treasured friendships that continued long after her working years.

Mary loved playing bridge. For more than 50 years, she gathered around the card table with the same wonderful group of women, sharing countless games, conversations, and memories. Her sons fondly remember bridge days at home, when they were banished to their rooms until the ladies took a break and were finally allowed to emerge for snacks.

Mary was also an active member of Northside Presbyterian Church, where her faith and the many dear friendships she cultivated were an important part of her life.

One of the beautiful constants throughout Mary's life was her gift for lasting friendship. Whether through her years at Memorial Hospital, her bridge club, or her church family, she built relationships that spanned decades. When Mary made a friend, she kept a friend.

Above all, Mary will be remembered as a loving mother, a proud Nena, a devoted sister, and a cherished friend. Her life was filled with the people she loved, and her memory will live on in the generations of family and friends who were fortunate enough to share it.

A celebration of Mary's life will be held on Friday, October 16, at 2:00 p.m. at Northside Presbyterian Church, 923 Mississippi Avenue.
