Margaret Cate

Margaret W. Cate, 93, of Cleveland, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2025.


She was a graduate of Girls Preparatory School and Mount Vernon College, Washington, D.C. Margaret was a longtime member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where she served as the President of the Women of the Church and was the first woman to be elected to the Vestry. She served on the board of the Cleveland Symphony Guild and was the Cleveland Chairman of the Tennessee Arts Commission. She also worked with many organizations in Chattanooga and served on the boards of the Girl's Club, Big Sisters and Girls Preparatory School. At GPS, she was President of the Alumnae Council, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and the 1993 winner of the Distinguished Alumnae Award.


Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, George E. Wheland and Martha West Wheland, and by her husband, Jim Cate. She is survived by a daughter, Margaret.


The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 18, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Cleveland from 11 am to 1 pm. There will be a private burial.
