Obituary
Joyce Ann Warren of Cleveland died Sunday morning January 29 at Life Care Center in Cleveland.
A native of Sparta Tennessee, she was born to the late Stanford and Gertrude Highers.
She moved with her husband to Cleveland in 1953 and began a long career in local education starting at Templeton Hill Elementary followed by Big Springs, and Michigan Avenue Elementary schools finally ending with Cleveland High School. She was with the group of faculty and students in fall of 1966 that marched from the Arnold Memorial School location to the new Cleveland High School building. In addition she taught night classes at Cleveland State Community College from its opening in 1967 until 1987.
Her passion was for teaching. During the 28 years she taught at Cleveland High School she taught typing and shorthand, but her biggest reward came from pioneering the model office concept for the Vocational Office Education (VOE) curriculum. This led to her publishing three text books, and about 40 workshops or conference speaking engagements in 18 different states. While she received awards several times in her career, her greatest satisfaction came from the successes experienced by her students.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Robert B Warren, one son, Bruce Warren (Akemi) of Sharpsburg, GA, one daughter, Jann Stephens (Gene) of Lawrenceville, GA. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Taylor and Zachary Stephens of Lawrenceville, GA and Stacey and Joshua Warren of Sharpsburg, GA. She is also survived by a sister, Jane Baker of Ann Arbor, MI, two nephews and one niece.
