In Memoriam: Joe Billy "Wahoo" McDaniel
On March 23rd, 2026, the city of Chattanooga lost a man of formidable scale and even more formidable spirit. Joe Billy McDaniel-known to the masses by the exuberant, near-theatrical moniker "Wahoo"-departed this life at the age of 69.
Wahoo was a man who understood that a community is not built on platitudes, but on the tireless, physical labor of those willing to run toward the flames. To describe him as merely a retired Lieutenant of the Chattanooga Fire Department is to understate a twenty-six-year tenure defined by the gritty, unglamorous heroism of public service. Not content with a quiet retirement, Wahoo spent nearly two decades as a courier for Blood Assurance. It was there that he became a fixture on the roads, piloting a vehicle he himself affectionately dubbed the 'blood buggy'-a title that possessed a touch of the absurd which he wore with effortless grace.
A graduate of Central High School, he was a "big guy" in every sense the phrase implies. Gifted with a natural, enviable athletic prowess, Wahoo moved through the world with the confidence of one who knew his own strength but chose to use it for the benefit of others. He was a dreamer, possessed by the rare, secular conviction that the world remains a place of infinite, untapped possibilities.
Wahoo now joins the silent majority, preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maury McDaniel, and his parents, Billy Joe and Patricia Elnora McDaniel.
He leaves behind a legacy of vitality in his daughter, Casey Hamby (Jacob); his granddaughters, Lilith, Iris, and Rose; Casey's brother, Shawn McDaniel; and his brothers, Akie McDaniel (Gayla) and Marty McDaniel (Kelly). He is further survived by his sister-in-law, Deborah Wilson Weston (Ray); niece, Lindsey Jo McDaniel; nephews, Jake McDaniel (Kaylee), Andrew McDaniel (Laura), and Dominic Biggers (Alexis); extended family and a sprawling assembly of friends who found in him a rare specimen of character.
In lieu of the customary and fleeting tribute of flowers, those wishing to honor Wahoo's memory are encouraged to engage in the far more rigorous and useful work of civic charity. One might consider a blood donation, or perhaps the donation of one's own time and resources to those in need. In a world of infinite possibilities, Wahoo would surely prefer a legacy of active service over a display of wilting blossoms.
A celebration of Wahoo's life will be held at a later date. Details regarding this assembly of friends and family will be shared once the arrangements have been properly settled.
