Johnny Ray Powers, 82, of Soddy Daisy, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 21, 2026, after a sudden illness. Johnny was born on June 23, 1944, to the late Henry Smith and Learlean Roddy Powers. He performed with various Bluegrass bands throughout his life, with fellow musicians from across the country! Johnny could happily pick up any stringed instrument and play it. He was the most passionate about the banjo, which he also built and sold over many decades. Other passions included tending a large garden and sharing his produce with family and friends. Johnny was a very social person and never met a stranger in his neighborhood or when attending bluegrass festivals. Johnny would want his bluegrass family to know how much their friendship inspired and encouraged him to keep playing, long after his retirement.
In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his wife, Alberta Powers.
He is survived by his daughter, Lisa (Dan) Young of Norwalk, IA; and stepson, Johnny Morgan of Georgia.
A Celebration of Life will be planned and announced at a later date.
