Janice Ann Keene, née Penley, was born on July 6, 1951, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she lived her entire life. A lifelong resident of Chattanooga, Janice was deeply rooted in her community and the place she called home.
She worked as both a librarian and a teacher, roles that reflected her love of learning, stories, and sharing knowledge with others. Janice was also a lifelong artist, illustrator, and storyteller who moved through the world with creativity and curiosity. She found meaning in the things she gathered and made, and art was a constant presence in her life-a way she understood, interpreted, and celebrated the world around her.
Janice passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, January 17, surrounded by loved ones.
She is survived by her daughter, Courtney Keene (Fil Bonifacio); her son, Christopher Keene; and her beloved grandchildren, Wyatt, Frances Jolene, and Jude. She is also survived by her sister, Phyllis Owens (husband Michael Owens), as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Janice also leaves behind her cherished cats, George and Wilson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frances and James Penley, and her brother, Jim Penley.
Janice will be remembered for her creativity, her gentle spirit, and the stories and art she shared with those who knew and loved her.
