Janet Maxine Shirk, born on January 27, 1944, in Maryville, Tennessee, departed this world peacefully on March 30, 2026. Maxine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill Shirk, her son, Richard Shirk, and loving parents Malcolm and Dorothy Grigsby. A dedicated sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she is survived by her sisters Pat Green and Mary Jo Ferreros (Victor Ferreros) and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her loving daughters Teresa Graham (Marty Walker) and Sheila Shirk (Catie Lay). Her spirit will continue to shine through her grandchildren Rachel Cloud, Chad King, Casey Hill (Josh Shepherd), Deborah Walker (Charlie Monday), and Daniel Walker, as well as her great-grandsons Landon King, Michael Cloud, and Jordan Shepherd, and great-granddaughter Paisley Shepherd. The family would also like to acknowledge Regina and Wesley Wolfenbarger.
Maxine's life was a vibrant tapestry woven with family bonds and personal triumphs. She embraced her passions with fervor, displaying a deep love for the Tennessee Vols and enjoying spirited games of mahjong. An unwavering fan of Elvis Presley, one of her most cherished memories was attending his concert at the Stokely Athletic Center in 1974, a moment that encapsulated her zest for life. Maxine attended Powell High School, and remained in close contact with many of her high schoold friends. Her unyielding commitment to self-improvement led her to earn her GED and a certificate from Pellissippi State Community College, opening the door to a fulfilling career in customer service at Cariten.
A traveler at heart, Maxine infused her adventures with her love for family, often creating lasting memories during their time together. As we reflect on her life, we celebrate her indomitable spirit and the joy she brought to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed but remembered fondly for her kindness, laughter, and unwavering love for those dear to her. May her legacy of love continue to inspire as we gather to honor her memory.
The family will have a celebration of life and rebirth at Meridian Baptist Church in South Knoxville on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 5-7 pm with services following immediately after. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to Meridian Baptist Church, Life Care Center of Morgan County, and Meals on Wheels.
