James Darwin Gunter

James Darwin Gunter, age 78, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2026. Born on August 4, 1947, James lived a life defined by love for his family, appreciation for the outdoors, and a deep enjoyment of the simple pleasures that brought people together.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Agnes Gunter; his sisters, Linda Croft, Barbara Reeves Collins, and Wanda Cole; and his brother, Eddie Gunter.

James is survived by his devoted wife, Donna Gunter; his daughter, Amy (Richard) Ownby; and his stepdaughter, Heather Self. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Caleb Ownby, Christian Self, Austin Self, Gracie Ownby, Kinsley Ownby, and Kaya Self. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews; his sisters-in-law, Karen (Mike) Hamilton and Janet Caldwell; and his brother-in-law, Gary Nicholson.

James had a deep love for fishing and spending time outdoors, where he found peace and joy. He treasured time with his family above all else. Whether relaxing on beach vacations, enjoying cruises, attending car shows, or sharing his enthusiasm as a gun enthusiast, James embraced life with a spirit of adventure and appreciation. His presence will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.

Visitation will be held at Companion Funeral Home - Cleveland Chapel on Thursday, March 5, 2026, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., with a service to follow officiated by Gary Higgins. A graveside service will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 12:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Mitchell Cole, Brandon Hamilton, Brayden Hamilton, Caleb Ownby, Steven Manning, and Richard Ownby (Honorary).
