James Warren Cross, 82, resided at Ashwood Square Retirement Community, Chattanooga, TN. He went home to be with our Lord, on Friday, August 7, 2026 after a lengthy illness.

Warren was born on June 11, 1944 in Albany, KY, to the late James and Eva Cross. He was a graduate of Ooltewah High School and Lee University. Warren served in the Army as an organist in the Chapel at McDonald Army Hospital Fort Eustis in VA. Afterwards, he received an Honorable Discharge.

Warren later studied at Lee University, University of GA, Chattanooga Conservatory of Music, Southern College, American Guild of Organ, Chattanooga, TN., and Royal College of Organ London, England. He was a member of Kappa Delta Pi: an international honor society for education; serving 40 years in different fields of Education- retiring from the Hamilton County School System.

Warren also served as an active church organist for 67 years serving different denominations:

Lutheran, Baptist, Church of God, Seventh Day Adventist, and 4 years in Mustard Seed Ministry with First Centenary United Methodist Church. He was a faithful, active member of Washington Hills United Methodist Church, and served as the organist. He also served at Lay Servant Holston Conference-UMC.

Survivors include his brother Paul Cross, sister-in-law Karen Cross and Wanda Cross, and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 24, 2026 at 12:30 pm at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Pastor Terryl James of Washington Hills United Methodist Church officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations be made to Lee University and Salvation Army in Warren's name.
