Gary Dale Moreland

Gary Dale Moreland, 79, of Athens, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 22, 2026, at his home.

Born on July 11, 1947, in Cleveland, Tennessee, Gary was the son of the late Rev. Joe Lynn Moreland and Grace Margaret "Ruby" (Webb) Moreland. He spent his life rooted in East Tennessee, where he was known for his quiet strength, generous spirit, and unwavering Christian faith.

Gary found great joy in the outdoors and especially loved fishing and hunting. In the latter years of his life, he became affectionately known for his personal "Purple Shirt Ministry." Wearing his signature purple shirt, he would gladly give one away to anyone interested while sharing the message that meant so much to him: "I'm nobody, telling everybody about Somebody who can save anybody-Jesus Christ." His deep love for the Lord was not only spoken but demonstrated through his everyday acts of kindness, compassion, and willingness to help others.

He is survived by his longtime significant other, Veronica Neal; his brother, Eddie J. Moreland (Susan); his daughters, Michele Moreland Ratliff (Jeff) and Melissa Moreland Thomas (Chuck); his son, Tyson Joe Dale Moreland (Tiffine); and his beloved grandchildren, Andrew R. Ratliff (Amanda), Lauren D. Ratliff, Jillian E. Ratliff, C. Tyler Thomas, Tanner D. Thomas, Cade T. Moreland, and Knox G. Moreland, along with extended family members and many friends whose lives were touched by his faith and kindness.

The family will honor Gary's legacy with a private Celebration of Life.

Though Gary will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing that his faith was the foundation of his life. His legacy of kindness, generosity, and steadfast devotion to Jesus Christ will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. He had a dep faith and love for the Lord which showed with his everyday acts of kindness to others.
