Gary Christopher Helms, affectionately known as "Chris," age 57, of McMinn County, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Chris was born on September 9, 1968, in Athens, Tennessee, to Gary Helms and Nannie Sue Snider.

Chris proudly served his country in the United States Army and National Guard. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Geology. Chris had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and found joy in nature. He loved animals of all kinds, especially dogs, and enjoyed riding his bike through the mountains. Known for his intelligence and quick sense of humor, Chris brought laughter and warmth to those around him.

He was a talented musician who enjoyed playing the drums and bongos, and he spent many years as a successful general contractor. Above all, Chris was a family-oriented man who cherished his loved ones deeply. His presence will be greatly missed, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Chris was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his beloved American Pit Bull, Buddha Clyde, who was more like a son to him and with whom he is now reunited.

He is survived by his sister, Gayla Helms Brown (James); niece, Alexis Hunter; nephew, Jordan Burgos; great-nephew, Triston Burgos; great-niece, Anaya Jackson; aunt, Connie Redmond; close cousins, Leann and Jamal Badgett, and Tammy Kerley; along with several other relatives and friends.

A graveside service to honor Chris will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 5:00 PM at Union McMinn Baptist Church Cemetery in Niota, Tennessee. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army and the McMinn County VFW, including a ceremonial gun salute.

Companion Funeral Home of Athens is honored to be entrusted with these arrangements.
