Eugene G. Mize Jr. passed away on May 14, 2026 surrounded by the love of his family. He was a devoted husband, loving dad, proud papaw, cherished brother and a faithful friend to so many. Gene shared 59 beautiful years of marriage with the love of his life, Grace Mize, building a family founded on love, laughter, faith, and unwavering devotion.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois B. Smith, his father Eugene G. Mize Sr. and his stepmother, Kathleen Mize.

Left to cherish his precious memory are his beloved wife, Grace Mize; his children Makayla (Alex) Taylor and Tyler (Kaleigh) Reason; and his treasured grandchildren, Abby Bell, Gracie Taylor, and Eli Taylor who brought endless joy to his life. He is also survived by his loving sisters Delois (David) Ramsey, April Herron and Sherry McCorkle, along with several nieces, nephews, extended family members and life long friends who loved him dearly. He is lovingly remembered by Mary Hembree, a special niece who considered him as a father figure.

Gene had a heart deeply devoted to God and to serving others. He loved gospel music and spent many years singing and sharing the love of Jesus with everyone he met. He was a faithful member of East Cleveland Church of God for more than 30 years. Gene served in many roles throughout his life including music director and church clerk/treasurer. His church family meant the world to him and his faith remained a guiding light throughout his life.

Gene worked for the Cleveland City Police Department for many years serving as a patrol officer on the weekends and dedicated many years of service to Hardwick Stove Company. Wherever he went, he was known for his warm smile, compassionate heart and willingness to help anyone in need. He loved fishing, spending time with his family, and making others laugh and creating memories that will forever be cherished. Gene had a special way of making everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved. His gentle spirit, caring nature, and strong faith touched countless lives. Although his family's hearts are broken, they find peace in knowing that Gene's legacy of love, kindness, faith, and compassion will continue to live on through all who knew and loved him.
