Ernie was born on October 27, 1948, in Rural Retreat, Virginia, to Earnest Maxwell Lundy and Evelyn Elizabeth Hubble Lundy. He grew up in Rural Retreat and graduated from Rural Retreat High School in 1966, where he had met Linda at a sock hop when they were thirteen.
