Emma Jean Cartwright Hixson, 88, a lifelong resident of Georgetown went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Easter Sunday Morning, March 27th, 2016 at her home surrounded by her family. Emma Jean was born on December 21st, 1927 and raised by her late grandparents Thomas & Minnie Campbell. She was of the Baptist faith and a longtime member of Brittsville Baptist Church. Emma Jean and her first husband Thomas Cartwright owned and operated Cartwright’s Service Station in the Georgetown Community for many years. Twelve years after Thomas’s passing she met an old sweetheart Alvin Hixson and was married for four years before his passing. She loved working in her yard and flower beds. Emma Jean spent many hours riding her mower over her four acres of beautiful yard. She also enjoyed spending much time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The highlight of her year was her annual shopping trip to Pigeon Forge with her four daughters. Emma Jean in addition to her grandparents is preceded in death by her father and mother Herman Shiflett and Gladys Campbell Shadden, her two husbands Thomas Cartwright and Alvin Hixson and two premature twin sons Willie Dean Cartwright and Thomas Eugene Cartwright and four brothers J. T. Shadden, Ruben “Cotton” Shadden, Kenneth Shadden and Harold Shadden. Emma Jean leaves behind to cherish her memory four daughters Glenda Cartwright Watson and her husband Reverend Richard Watson, Bobbie Cartwright Brown and her husband Kenny, Kim Cartwright Colbaugh and her husband Carl and Karen Cartwright Stevenson and her husband David, five sisters-in-laws Bobbie Shadden, Shirley Shadden, Icyle Shadden, Anna Jean Campbell and Mary Ruth Leamon, eight grandchildren Reverend Keith Watson (Karen), Cheryl Lee (Michael), Sheriff Eric Watson (Tenille), Greg Brown, Justin Colbaugh (Christina), Derek Colbaugh and girlfriend Taylor, Brian Stevenson and girlfriend Ashley and Marcus Stevenson great grandchildren Austin, Rebecca & Hannah Watson, Brandon & Britney Lee, Summer Watson, Hunter Clark, MacKenzie & Kadyn Copeland, Annaliese, Caroline & Baby Jackson Colbaugh. She is also survived by special nephews and niece Brent Shadden, Jeff Shadden and Lori Bacon, numerous other extended family members, church family and a host of special friends. The family would like to say a special Thank You to Judy Green and the ladies of Brittsville Baptist Church and also the staff of Amedisys Of Athens Hospice Care.
A celebration of her life is planned for Wednesday, March 30th, 2016 at 2:00 PM at the Brittsville Baptist Church with the Reverend Ken Purdie, the Reverend Keith Watson and the Reverend Richard Watson officiating. Interment will follow in the Johnston Cemetery with her grandsons serving as pallbearers: Reverend Keith Watson, Sheriff Eric Watson, Greg Brown, Justin Colbaugh, Derek Colbaugh, Brian Stevenson and Marcus Stevenson. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday night, March 29th, 2016 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and also from 12:00 noon until the 2:00 PM service time on Wednesday.
