Doug Cofer, 84, of Charleston, TN died after a brief illness early Sunday morning surrounded by his wife and son.
Born the youngest of eleven children to Raymond and Effie Cofer in rural Meigs County and raised in nearby Georgetown, he worked as a pipefitter for Dupont for 35 years before retiring in 1992 to invest in real estate. Doug was an avid sports fan and Elvis fanatic. He loved nature and animals. Always a kid at heart, he loved his butter pecan ice cream and peppermint candy. Never one to mince his words, he could be stubborn and quite temperamental (as his family and friends would attest.) A stroke in 2023 slowed him but didn't damper his spirit.
Doug is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sandra, and son Alan Cofer, both of Charleston, granddaughters Ashley Martin of Nashville, Emily "Gracie" (Griffin) Hill and great granddaughters, Brooklyn and Blake Hill, all of Murfreesboro, his four- legged companion, Chaco, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Christi Cofer Martin, as well as eleven siblings, Willie White Cofer, Wilba (Otis) Poole, Dorothy Harris, Frankie Ray (Leonard) Standrige, James Raymond Jr (Eva) Cofer, Donald Lee (Faye) Cofer, Bryant Allen (Barbara Jo) Cofer, Geraldine (Homer) Harris, Taylor Prentice (Betty Jean) Cofer, and Faye (Dale) Roark.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 8, 2026 from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm at Companion Funeral Home - The Ridge Sanctuary.
