Dessie "Irene" Ellis, age 75, entered the gates of Heaven on October 10, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories and a family who loved her dearly.

Irene was born on September 15, 1951, in Reliance, Tennessee, to the late Meldon Sanford and Margie Garrett.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Johnny Dalton Hicks.

Irene spent many years driving a school bus, a job she thoroughly enjoyed and one that allowed her to touch the lives of countless children and families throughout the years.

Known lovingly as Mamaw to her grandchildren, Irene was a woman full of life, with a spunky spirit and a personality all her own. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether sitting on the porch, tending to her flower gardens, working on crafts, or taking trips to Florida. She had a special way of making life a little brighter just by being herself.

Above all, Irene loved her family greatly. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild were an important part of her life, and the memories they shared with her will forever hold a special place in their hearts. Her feisty spirit, her love for the things that made her happy, and the special place she held in her family's lives will never be forgotten.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Herbert (Teri) McCall; her daughters, Tammy (Ronnie) Malone and Melissa Clay; and her beloved grandchildren, Tyler McCall, Kobe McCall, Michael (Teresa) Carver, Megan (Chandler) Cassel, and London Clay. She also leaves behind three step-grandchildren by marriage, Jack, John, and Charlotte Malone, and one precious great-grandchild, Jasper Carver.

She is also survived by her sister, Sharon (Tommy) Prince, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members who will miss her dearly.

Though her family takes comfort in knowing that she has entered her heavenly home, her absence will be deeply felt. The stories, laughter, and memories she leaves behind will continue to live on through the generations who loved her.

A life full of love, a spirit full of fire, and a heart that will forever be part of her family.

The family will honor Irene's life with a quiet graveside memorial.
