Carl Nelson Mitchell Jr.

Carl Nelson Mitchell Jr., 91, a resident of Athens, TN passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 in a local hospital. Carl was born in Meigs County on August 26, 1927 and has been a resident of this area his entire life. He was retired from Athens Stove Works. Carl was an active member of the Valley View Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents Carl & Effie Lee Lewis Mitchell, three brothers Charles Leroy Mitchell Claude “Buddy” Mitchell and Clyde Mitchell and three sisters Margaret Brannan, Jeanette Ratledge and Maxine Thurman.
Carl is survived by his loving wife of 36 years Gladys Lingerfelt Mitchell, two daughters and sons in law Charlotte & Joe Haun and Virginia & Tommy Tallent, two step sons and their wives Thomas Carroll & Darlene and Roger Carroll & Kayley, one grandson Travis Haun, one granddaughter of the heart Elizabeth Tallent, one brother Clifford Paul Mitchell (Dora), one sister Pauline Powell (Gene), two sisters in law Madeline Mitchell and Katherine Mitchell, one brother in law Tommy Thurman, three great grandsons, three step grandchildren, six step great grandchildren, numerous other extended family members and a host of special friends.
A graveside service is planned for Friday, January 18, 2019 at 1:00 PM in the McMinn Memory Gardens with the Reverend Hoyt Melton and the Reverend Paul Mitchell officiating. Travis Haun, Nathan Carroll, Devin Carroll, Randy Thurman, Adam Mitchell and Lester Cagle will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorial donations be made in Carl’s memory to the Valley View Baptist Church Building Fund.
