Listen to Obituary

Billy Ray Swafford, 92, of Englewood, TN, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

A devoted member of Dixon Avenue Baptist Church, Bill lived his life with a servant's heart, a gentle spirit, and a deep love for his family, friends, and community.

At a young age, Bill proudly entered the United States Army and served with courage in the Korean War, where he fought in the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge. His family has always been deeply proud of his dedication and sacrifice for our country.

Bill was truly a man of many hats-quite literally. For more than 20 years, he brought joy to the children of his community by dressing up as the town Santa and Easter Bunny. Whether spreading holiday cheer, lending a helping hand, or offering a kind word, Bill was known as a sweet, funny man who loved making others smile.

He cherished spending time with his devoted partner, Ruby. Together they enjoyed many meals at Western Sizzlin', evenings out dancing, and countless quiet moments shared in love and companionship. Bill also looked forward to crappie fishing and treasured every moment spent with his family.

Words cannot fully express how deeply he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Robert Swafford and Anna Mae (Duff) Williams; his widow, Jimmie A. Swafford; siblings, Judy Faulkner and Porter Swafford; and his cherished son, James Lynn Swafford.

Left to honor and cherish his memory is his devoted partner of many years, Ruby, with whom he shared a Church Marriage; daughter-in-law, Sheila Swafford; grandson, James Caleb Swafford (Ashley); step-son, Mike Boone; great-grandson, Grayson Caleb Swafford; honorary grandchildren, Megan, Nicole, and Jason; nephew, Wayne McKinney; along with numerous honorary great-grandchildren and extended family members who loved him dearly.

A graveside service to celebrate Bill's life will be held on Friday, December 12, 2025, at 4 p.m. at Cochran Cemetery in Englewood, TN. The United States Army will be present to provide military honors in recognition of Bill's service.

Companion Funeral Home of Athens, TN, and the Cody Family are honored to assist the family during this time.
