Barbara Brittain Stone, age 74, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2026.
Born in Falls Church, Virginia, Barbara lived a life defined by kindness, service, faith, and a genuine love for people. She never met a stranger and had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved. Her generous spirit and caring heart touched countless lives, and she was always willing to help anyone in need.
Barbara earned her Bachelor's degree in Education from William & Mary and later received her Master's degree from University of Virginia. It was during her time at UVA that she met the love of her life, James Patterson Stone, sharing 44 wonderful years of marriage.
As a Reading Specialist, Barbara dedicated her career to helping children and adults develop a love of reading and learning. She believed deeply in the power of education and literacy and found great joy in helping others gain confidence through reading. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students and families.
An avid reader throughout her life, Barbara was a member of numerous book clubs and rarely found herself without a book nearby. Her passion for learning and service led her to become deeply involved in the Cleveland community. She devoted countless hours to philanthropic and civic organizations, including service with the Cleveland Medical Society, the United Way, The Education Foundation, and the Cleveland Public Library. She was awarded the Woman of Impact by United Way in 2018. Through these roles, Barbara worked tirelessly to improve opportunities for others and strengthen the community she loved.
Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was a devoted member of First Baptist Church Cleveland.
Above all else, Barbara treasured her family. She is survived by her beloved husband, James Patterson Stone; her son, James Brittain Stone and his wife, Hailey; her daughter, Jessica Stone Hulgan and her husband, Gordon Hulgan IV; and her cherished grandson, Gordon Hulgan V, who brought immeasurable joy to her life.
Barbara's legacy is one of faith, compassion, generosity, and service. She will be remembered for her warm smile, her selfless heart, her dedication to education, and her unwavering commitment to helping others. Though she will be deeply missed, her influence and example will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched.

Visitation will be held at Companion Funeral Home & Crematory, 6018 John Douglas Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37421, on Friday, June 5, 2026, from 11:30 A.M.-12:00 P.M. followed by a service at 12:00 P.M. with Tom Wicks officiating. .
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to United Way of the Ocoee Region in honor of Barbara's lifelong commitment to serving others.
