Arnold Basil Clapp, age 83, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026. Born on February 22, 1943, Arnold lived a life marked by dedication to his profession, a love of learning, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney Olborn Clapp and Thelma Newton Clapp. Arnold also held a special place in his heart for the many beloved pets who were part of his life, including his childhood companions-cats Evelena and Susie, his bulldog Muggs, his white Pekin duck Sedrick, and his parakeets Pretty Boy and Buttercup-as well as his cherished black Scottish Terrier, Katie Kirkpatrick Clapp, in adulthood.
Arnold is survived by his loving wife, Linda Jean Clapp, and his stepson, Dale (Maria) Patrick Foreman.
Arnold's life was one of service, education, and quiet accomplishment. During his high school years, he proudly served on the Mount Pisgah Academy Volunteer Fire Department near Asheville, North Carolina. He went on to attend Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and minors in English and Religion.
Shortly after, Arnold moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he began a distinguished career with the Tennessee Department of Revenue that spanned nearly 44 years. His dedication and work ethic led him to pursue further education while working full time; he attended night school and graduated from the Nashville School of Law in 1988. Over the years, he rose through the department, ultimately serving as General Counsel and Director of the Department's Legal Office.
Beyond his professional life, Arnold was a man of thoughtful reflection and creativity. He wrote free verse poetry, often rich in symbolism and at times deeply autobiographical. Following his retirement, Arnold and Linda returned to Collegedale, where he continued his lifelong pursuit of knowledge by attending university classes, particularly enjoying the study of history.
Arnold also gave back to his community through volunteer work at Southern Adventist University. He and Linda found great joy in attending university events, including concerts, student music recitals, and community dinners-moments that reflected his appreciation for fellowship, education, and the arts.
Arnold will be remembered for his intellect, his steady commitment to service, his love of learning, and the quiet, meaningful way he engaged with the world around him. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication, curiosity, and kindness that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
